The letter that follows the number indicates the colour of the cartridge.
A=black, Y=yellow, M=magenta and C=cyan.

STEP 1
On the bottom of the cartridge, near the printhead, you will find a piece of tape. Remove it. You should now see a steel ball inserted in the plastic housing. Using a pen or some other pointed instrument, push the ball into the cartridge.
You are now ready to refill.

STEP 2
Using the syringe, draw up 10 cc of ink. Insert needle into the hole you just created and inject the ink slowly Repeat the above procedure two more times until you have injected 20 cc of ink. The HP45 cartridge takes about 30 cc of ink.

STEP 3
Insert the set screw into the refill hole. While squeezing the sides of the cartridge, screw in the set screw just below the surface, using the allen key. Now place small piece of clear scotch tape (not included) over filling hole about a half inch square.
If you don't squeeze the cartridge enough it will leak through the printhead.
Place the cartridge on some newspapers for about 30 minutes. If it leaks through the printhead, remove the setscrew and repeat step 3.

HINT: USE A SMALL 3" C CLAMP, OR CLAMP IT IN A VICE, TO SQUEEZE THE SIDES IN WHILE YOU SCEW IN THE SETSCREW.
You can purchase c clamps at your local hardware store for a couple of dollars.
Place a small piece of scotch tape over the setscrew.
Let cartridge sit for at least 15 minutes before placing back in printer...

OTHER INFORMATION

bullet
Always cover work area with several layers of newspaper when working with ink.
bullet
USE YOUR COMMON SENSE. Refilling should be done in a garage, utility room, on a kitchen counter close to a sink. Do not do this on your dining room table. Accidents can happen.
bullet
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST. Reading through the entire instructions first is a must. Make sure that you understand all of the instructions before starting.
bullet
TAKE YOUR TIME. You must inject the ink very slowly. Haste makes waste. Be patient.
bullet
NEVER, NEVER put the cartridge back into the printer right after it has been refilled. Let the refilled cartridge sit on the stack of newspapers, print head down, for at least thirty minutes. This is to make sure the cartridge is not leaking and to make sure the ink is absorbed evenly.
bullet
Never allow a cartridge to sit empty for more than a day. Cartridges that are unwrapped and not installed in the printer will dry out and may become clogged. If you have more than one cartridge always refill your empty as soon as possible. Replace the print head sealing clip (if it has any) and seal it in a (zip lock) plastic bag. (We have universal cartridge clips on sale that can do the job.)

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Problem Cause Solution
Faded print/no print Air bubble Hold cartridge over sink or newspaper and squeeze the sides to force a small amount of ink through the print head. With damp towel wipe off excess ink.
Faded print/no print Continuity Using an alcohol moistened cotton swab, clean the contact strip on the cartridge and on the printer.
Leaking from print head Set screw not properly installed Repeat Step 3
Leaking from print head Overfilled You have overfilled the cartridge. Pull back on the syringe and draw out some ink. Place cartridge, fill hole down, on some paper towels for a few minutes.

Regular maintenance: To avoid printing problems with inkjets, it is important to keep the inside of the printer clean and free of dust. Use of a keyboard vacuum or compressed air will remove paper dust that could clog the inkjets.
